On Thursday the 10th I received another e-mail. This time referencing a downloaded game. Due to the logging in place I was able to identify the person responsible. For the immediate future I have decided to block peer to peer transfers. You may be allowed to use peer to peer services by calling the office at 396-5139 and requesting the service be restored.
Be advised that all peer to peer traffic will be logged and monitored. The threat to block our IP address from Internet access is not to be taken lightly. I am working with the provider to see if there is a way to resume peer to peer traffic.

After some research I have decided that pending advice from an attorney specializing in Internet law, I will be logging all peer to peer traffic.
I will only keep 10 days of logs and reveal them only if required by a subpoena. I would prefer not to have these logs, but I must take steps to protect all of our users from the possible termination of the service.

On August 20, 2009 I received an e-mail from our bandwidth provider. The origin was Warner Bros. Entertainment. It alleges that on August 18 2009 bit torrent was used by one of our customers to download a movie illegally.
See the information below.

INFRINGEMENT DETAIL
--------------------
Infringing Work: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince First Found: 18 Aug 2009 22:10:04 EDT (GMT -0400) Last Found: 18 Aug 2009 22:10:04 EDT (GMT -0400) IP Address: 216.110.210.226 IP Port: 45555 Protocol: BitTorrent Torrent InfoHash: 3EBB4C1F22F9BBAE73DA913F681ACDE53179A654 Containing file(s): Harry.Potter.6.Half.Blood.Prince.CAM.XviD.EngAudio-androme.torrent (716,156,681 bytes)

Our bandwidth provider was asked to disable our account. As they know we resell the bandwidth they were nice enough to forward the e-mail to me and ask that I take steps to determine which of our clients was responsible, and take appropriate action.

I have intentionally not logged this kind of activity in the past. This has left me with some culpability as I have no easy way of identifying the perpetrator.

With the threat of losing our bandwidth I have no choice but to start logging peer to peer traffic. With the information provided in the e-mail I will be able to identify the customer that is involved. I am sorry that these steps must be taken.

In the interim while this is being implemented I have blocked all peer to peer traffic to appease our bandwidth provider and Warner Bros.

There are numerous sites that are used to detect and identify illegal downloading. The identification of the person doing this can result in extremely large fines, criminal charges, prison time or all three.

Please be aware that illegal internet usage is prohibited in our terms of use. I will disable the account of any person that is found to be using the internet illegally, and upon receiving a subpoena forward the information to the requesting party.
